LWV Plans 2005 Speaking Calendar

The League is in the throws of planning its 2005 speaking engagements. On the bill are Christie Todd Whitman, George Latimer, and Nita Lowey among others. Topics for our upcoming series include the state of the two (or more) parties, kicking off with a discussion of the Republican Party by ex-Bush cabinet member and former NJ Governor, Christie Todd Whitman.

Nita Lowey will address residents on the topic of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act. Chosen by her colleagues to serve on the "Select Committee on Homeland Security" in 2003, Congresswoman Lowey is well informed on these issues and how they effect local residents as well as all Americans.

Our own George Latimer will speak to citizens about How our Local and State Governments Work. Learn more about getting involved and how to make progress working with your local, county and state governments.

Other speakers are currently being finalized, topics will range from national Social Security Reform to the neo-democratic party to limiting the role of unregulated campaign contributions through the 527 loophole.

LWV Holds Forum on Parking in Rye CBD
Dec 7th, 2004, 7:30pm - 9:30pm at Rye Rec

A group of 30 Rye residents, merchant residents, and non-resident merchants participated along with Mayor Otis and three council representatives (Mssrs. Hennes, Fahey and Seitz) an open forum sponsored by the LWV to discuss the plans for parking meters in Rye’s CBD. The event was moderated by LWV member Clifford Nelson, Esq. (Meeting Notes)

Background

There has been much debate in recent Rye City Council meetings about parking alternatives in Rye's Central Business District (CBD). While the City Council is considering many opportunities to increase city revenues, of which Parking Meters are one option, the Rye Merchants Association has a petition with signatures from Rye residents. The Rye Merchants Association, while in favor of the city's efforts to increase revenues, has focused its energies on alternatives to increase the number of available parking spaces.

Given the solution will likely affect residents, the character of Rye's CBD as well as merchants for years to come, the LWV invited Rye residents along with representatives from the City Council and the Merchants Association to discuss and debate their points of view in an open forum. The Forum was held on December 7th at Rye Rec, click here to read Notes from the meeting.
